If we had to pick our favorite category of food, it would probably be snacks.
And here’s why! Snacks can be sweet or savory (or both at the same time!). They can be taken on the go and enjoyed during your favorite activity, like taking a hike, hanging out with your grandma, or playing video games. And they can be cute!
Cute? Maybe cute isn’t something you look for in a food, but we think food should put the FUN in functional! Making sandwich look like a monster makes a sandwich better, doesn’t it?
That’s why store-bought Cheddar cheese fish crackers are so popular! Sure, they’re just little salty, cheesy crackers, which is good enough already. But if you’re choosing between the square ones and the ones that look like fish, the fish are usually going to win.
We think the only way to make a cute, cheesy snack better is to make it ourselves. Sure, it’s a little more work, but they taste better, and we create the attitude of the fish we’re going to eat. Happy face, funny face, glasses! Sign us up!
We developed a new recipe for Cheddar Cheese Fish Crackers, and not only were they fun to make, but they are amazingly delicious, and you can customize them however you like.
Our version has part whole wheat flour (always a good thing!), sharp Cheddar cheese, and some very mild seasoning. But you can blend in chile powder if you like it spicy, curry powder if you like it spicy-in-a-different-way, or even some apple chips if you’re a fan of apple pie a la Cheddar!
You can add all sorts of ingredients to color your fish, like beet root powder or spirulina (red fish, blue fish!). Ground turmeric will make the fish a bit more yellow, like the ones you buy at the store, since without the addition of food coloring, the ones we made were just sort of… cracker colored.
We even figured out a way to make our fish hi-tech! You can buy a fish cookie cutter, but we created a file so that you can 3D print a cutter if you access to a printer at home, school, or work. Visit Thingiverse and download the file to print your own cookie cutter!
Is there anyway to make these gluten free?
We haven’t tried them with a gluten-free flour blend, but let us know if you do! They might be a little extra sticky with GF flour, so roll them out between parchment paper for a little help.
