A person’s favorite food is not necessarily the food a person eats every day. After all, donuts aren’t dinner…most of the time. But if you’re lucky, your favorite foods might be something that you can enjoy often and in a lot of different ways – like baked potatoes or scrambled eggs!
We think it’s really important that you be able to cook your favorite foods for yourself, but also for your friends and family. So keep checking back for our new How To posts, because starting today, we’re going to start giving you our best tips and tricks so you can cook the foods you love!
And what better place to start than with eggs? There are about a million ways to eat eggs: hard-boiled, sunny-side-up, poached. But we think the best – and easiest – way to enjoy eggs is to scramble them.
We recommend cooking 2 eggs for each person, so if you are making scrambled eggs just for yourself, just make 2. If you are making scrambled eggs for yourself and your best bud, make 4. You don’t have to, but you can add milk to your eggs to help keep them from getting dry. We suggest about 1 tablespoon of milk for every 2 eggs you make (so if you’re making those 4 eggs for you and your best bud, you’ll need 2 tablespoons of milk!).
So now that you have your eggs and milk ready, put everything in a big mixing bowl. Of course, you’ll need to crack your eggs into the bowl and throw away the shell. If you get any pieces of shell in the bowl, use half of your egg shell to help scoop it out. You might notice that those little pieces run away from your finger, but not the shell!
Use a whisk or even just a simple dinner fork to whisk the eggs and milk together until they’re all mixed up. Add a pinch of salt and some ground black pepper, if you like it.
Scrambled eggs are easier to make in a nonstick pan (because they can get sticky!), and we like adding a little bit of butter or canola oil to the pan to help out. You’ll want to put your butter in the pan and then turn on the heat so the pan gets warm, but not too hot.
Add your eggs, and then use a spatula to stir it around the pan. It can take a few minutes, but you’ll start to see the egg cooking and forming pieces at the bottom of the pan. Keep your spatula moving, and be sure to scrape the sides and bottom of the pan, until the eggs are totally cooked into pieces of scrambled egg. The more you mix, the smaller the pieces will be – and any size is okay if it tastes great to you.
Turn off the heat, and if you want to add cheese, now is the time! You can add any kind of cheese that you want, like American, Cheddar, or Swiss. Shredded cheese will melt fastest, but you can also break up slices with your hand and then toss them in. Stir it all up to melt the cheese.
Now is the best part: the eating! Some people like to eat their eggs plain, with ketchup, or even hot sauce, if they like it spicy!! You can eat yours however you want, including with cooked veggies, like spinach, mushrooms, or bell peppers, or even with leftovers from dinner, like Sun-Dried Tomato Pesto or Roasted Brussels Sprouts.
You can eat your eggs with an English muffin or on top of toast, which sometimes we call a tartine. You can scoop them into a warm tortilla with some salsa and bacon, and eat it as a breakfast taco or burrito (this is really popular at our campus in San Antonio, Texas!).
You can even put scrambled eggs in dinner foods, like fried rice. And that leads us to the most important part: you can eat eggs for breakfast, lunch, OR DINNER! Eggs have lots of protein and some healthy fats that help fuel you, so even though we think of them as morning food, they’re good for you all day.
