cheddar cheese fish crackers

Makes about 3 cups crackers

We think homemade snacks are the best snacks, and these cute little fish are too good to pass up. We added a bit of whole wheat flour and went light on the butter to make these a bit more virtuous, but no less delicious—in fact, they’re more delicious than the store-bought variety. You can order a fish cookie cutter online, if you like, or they can be cut into squares to keep it super simple.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup whole wheat flour
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 8 oz sharp Cheddar, shredded
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, cubed
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic granules
  • 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt

Directions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F.
  2. In a large food processor, combine the flours, Cheddar, butter, garlic, and salt. Pulse to combine the mixtures, then process until a ball forms (be patient, this can take longer than you expect).
  3. Turn the dough out onto a floured counter and, working in batches, if needed, roll the dough until it is an even 1/4-inch thick. Cut into whatever shape you like, then transfer to a baking sheet. Use a skewer to poke a hole (or more, if making larger crackers) in the center of the cracker. For fish, place the hole where the eye would be.
  4. Bake until the crackers begin to brown around the edges, about 12 minutes for small fish. Cool completely, then transfer to a covered container to store.
